If there is one thing I know for certain about our little family, it’s that we love food. Since the hubby’s job moves us every two years or so (gotta love the Army), our absolute favorite way to get to know our new “home” is to try out all the fun local eateries that are available to us. And although we are still busy trying to unpack our home and hang things on our walls, we still enjoy finding the time to chow down at local eats.

One of the most amazing surprises that we have received since moving to Williamsburg, VA is that our neighborhood organizes food trucks to come by our pool house almost every Friday. It has become our family’s “end of the week” treat to get together and walk down to the food trucks to grab something yummy. And since COVID-19 has drastically changed the way most of us dine out, this was the perfect solution for us.

So enough with the chit chat. Let’s shine some light on these two amazing food trucks, shall we?

Alright, y’all. If you are in love with BBQ as much as the hubby is, then this food truck is a definite no brainer for you.

Led by the amazing husband and wife team of Matt and Nicole Sileno, Matchsticks BBQ Co. has quickly become a family favorite since moving here to Williamsburg. Not only has their barbeque won numerous awards (2019 Best BBQ Gold – Coastal Virginia Magazine, 2019 Best Pulled Pork – Williamsburg BBQ Cookoff, & 2020 Best Catering Company – Coastal Virginia Magazine), but the friendly service and love for their community is unparalleled and is, quite frankly, a much needed breath of fresh air.

We are always so delighted by their positive attitudes and welcoming smiles as we approach their food truck window. You can clearly tell that they love what they do. And finding that kind of service during a global pandemic is truly something special. Be on the lookout for their new brick and mortar restaurant that will coming to Midtown Row in Williamsburg soon!

Wondering about the food? Of course you are. Y’all. It is straight up AH-MAZING! All the meat options were tender and delicious (even the turkey breast which is usually not something I go for). Their accompanying bbq sauces were dynamite! Can’t choose between their State Sauce or Pitt Sauce? Don’t! Ask for both. And as a little insider tip…they are great by themselves, but try mixing them together. I will just say it now. You’re welcome.

Now the hubby and I agree on a lot of topics but ranking our favorites from the Matchsticks menu was not one of those. So, since we have different tastes when it comes to BBQ, here is a quick ranking of our favorite items on their menu:

The Hubby’s Favorites:

1.       Sausage (Mild or Hot)

2.       Brisket

3.       Ribs

4.       Baked Beans

Angie’s Favorites:

1.       Pulled Pork

2.       Sausage (Mild or Hot)

3.       Brisket

4.       Baked Beans

The Kiddos Loved:

Pulled Pork, Sausage, & Mac N’ Cheese

Quick Tip:

If you have little kiddos who are not fans of spicy food, be sure to pass on the collard greens. I absolutely loved them, but man oh man do they have an unexpected kick of spice. Grab their Mac N’ Cheese or Lemon Slaw instead.

And if you want a killer sandwich, try out The Colonial. It has their brisket, pulled pork, and sausage. All of MY FAVES in one meal. YUM!

Shake It Up

This one is for my friends out there with the major sweet tooth (I see you and I get you)! Get ready to take everything you know about milkshakes and throw them out the window when you take one look at the yummy concoctions that come from Shake It Up.

Based out of Hampton Roads, Virginia, this food truck takes the concept of “Monster Milkshakes” and brings them to life. Let’s just say, our kids were in ice cream heaven! Jadyn’s love for cotton candy ice cream took on new heights and I definitely was not complaining about the amount of crushed cookies I found in mine.

Now mind you that the hubby was super disappointed that he wasn’t able to try their Strawberry Cheezecake milkshake (he isn’t a fan of sweets normally so that is how good these were). With that said, we definitely cannot wait to have some more when they roll into town again!

Menu Items We Loved:

Crazy Cookie – Vanilla Cookie Milkshake topped with crushed sandwich cookies, a chocolate chip cookie sandwich, mini Hershey Cookies & Cream white chocolate bars, whipped cream, and chocolate syrup.

Crazed Candy – Cotton Candy Milkshake LOADED with candy confections (cotton candy, sour gummy worms, Nerds, Mega Pixie Stick, & rainbow lollipop stick).

Kids Tip:

Be sure to let the kiddos eat this one outside and bring some wipes. Things are about to get messy and a little sticky!
