What If Your Calling is Smaller (and Holier) than You Thought?

“You are exactly where I need you to be. Remain faithful…steadfast.”
I heard God speak this on my heart during one of my quiet moments with Him. At the time, I had been struggling with seeing results within my business. In the world’s view, I questioned if I was doing enough or was really supposed to be doing this in the first place.
In today’s society, if we are not careful, we can feel like what we are doing is not enough. We look at our purpose and what we are doing in our lives and feel that we have somewhere missed the mark. So what do we do? We push harder. Work harder. Neglect important relationships and question where God has us. We tend to imagine that our calling and purpose has to be something really big or its not worth pursuing.Because is it worth it if our purpose is not something that feels impressive when we explain it to our friends and family out loud?
Most of us look for clarity and certainty. We search for a moment when everything clicks and we finally know what we are meant to do with our lives. And when that clarity does not come, we often assume we are missing something, falling behind, or that God did not hear us..
But what if calling doesn’t always arrive that way? What if it doesn’t announce itself with confidence and clarity, but instead reveals itself quietly, through ordinary days and repeated faithfulness?
I’ve been thinking about how so many of those I love who are in my inner circle get so frustrated when they do not have it all figured out. Especially the women who I hold dear. We want to steward our gifts well and get so caught up in whether our lives actually matter. But somewhere along the way, that desire can turn into striving. We start chasing a version of calling that feels visible, measurable, and meaningful by the world’s standards instead of God’s.
But let me just say this…scripture offers us a different picture.
Again and again, God works through the small and the unseen. He works through daily obedience, faithfulness that rarely gets noticed, and through people tending what is right in front of them.
Feeding families.
Caring for homes.
Creating quietly.
Praying faithfully.
Showing up again tomorrow.
What if your calling is not about building something impressive, but about being present?
What if holiness looks less like doing more and more like paying attention and slowing down?
Slowing down enough to hear God’s instruction for your life. Being present enough to express the gratitude we have for the blessings we already currently have.
There is something deeply sacred about small faithfulness. About choosing love in ordinary moments and practicing creativity or prayer even when no one else sees it and nothing tangible comes from it.
I’m learning that calling often unfolds slowly. It doesn’t always feel clear or purposeful in the moment. Sometimes it looks like staying when you’d rather rush ahead. And sometimes it just looks like trusting that God is at work even when your life feels repetitive or unfinished.
So here is my invitation to you.
To stop chasing a bigger calling.
Not to rush toward clarity.
But to notice the holy ground beneath your feet and the greater Heavenly Father who just wants a relationship with you.
Because a smaller calling doesn’t mean a lesser one.
Often, it means a deeper one.
And perhaps the truest calling of all is simply this:
to be faithful where you are, with what you’ve been given…today.
