Happy Friday Sweet Readers!
And if you are a brand new visitor….
Welcome! Welcome! I hope you will stay awhile. ☺
The first of October was yesterday and boy did the weather change overnight. It has gotten fairly chilly outside where we live and I could not be happier. I love that I can wear a cardigan and pull out my favorite throw blanket as I spend my quiet moments on our patio out back. I love all of the outdoor events that are associated with the season of Autumn. Pumpkin patches, corn field mazes, hayrides, bonfires, Fall festivals, and local fairs.
I adore going to a county fair when the temperatures begin to fall. The atmosphere and the cooler weather is just something I look forward to each year. The rides, the laughter, the shows, and most importantly, the food! I am going to go out on a limb and state that I believe it is pretty obvious that if you are going to a local or state fair, that your food selection is not going to be the healthiest. And honestly, I would not want it to be!
You’re at a fair for crying out loud!
It’s time to let your hair loose and let that inner child out to have some fun.
For many of us, there are the usual guilty foodie pleasures. Turkey legs, funnel cakes, corn dogs, candy apples, and cotton candy. But in the past few years, a newbie has emerged. A deliciously fried delight that never fails to get me all giddy inside.
What am I talking about?
Okay for those of you who are thinking, ‘Ew! Fried what?’, do not knock it until you have tried it. There is something about frying that sandwich cookie that completely transforms the Oreo into a warm, creamy, gooey chocolate delight. These are some of my absolute favorites to have when I am at the fair and it is probably safe to say that I start scouting the area for where I can purchase them the minute I arrive.
A few weeks back, our family attended Oktoberfest here in town and had a fantastic time. Unfortunately, I was so stuffed from schnitzel, beer, and German potato salad that I did not even think about getting any fried oreos while I was there. So, it was no surprise that when I was shopping at the grocery store and came upon these Limited Edition Pumpkin Spice Oreos, I instantly knew that I wanted to fry them.
Last Saturday morning, I was busily getting everything ready to make these sweet treats when the hubby emerged from the office. He made a beeline for the opened bag of Oreos. At the corner of my eye, I noticed he took a bite and could already tell he was not a fan.
“Well, what do you think?” I asked.
With his mouth still full, he continued to chew, shrugged his shoulders, and said, “I don’t know. I guess they are okay. I still prefer the double stuffed Oreos or the mint ones.” Still chewing away, he casually walked back to his office to continue his studies and shut the door.
Huh. Let’s see about that. Challenge accepted!
I chose to use our favorite basic batter recipe for these Pumpkin Spice Fried Oreos that originates from the September 2011 issue of The Food Network Magazine. To that basic batter recipe, I added some ground cinnamon and sugar.
They do not take long to make and before I knew it, I had a pile of these fried lovelies sitting on a plate. Now, I do not know if I give off some kind of signal that only the hubby hears, but every time I am finishing up in the kitchen, he comes in without warning to give his “official” stamp of approval with a Daddy Taste Test. He walked toward the plate, took a bite out of one, and I quickly got a glimpse of what looked like a smile on his face.
“What do you think? Are they good?” I asked.
He nodded. “Not bad. They are really good.”
The kids seemed to be huge fans of them as well. Once they woke up from their deep slumber, they proceeded in gobbling these up. Before I knew it, they were gone! Disappeared completely before the day had ended.
When I asked J if her and her brother ate them all she just turned to me and protested with a simple, “But they are so yummy!”
Crispy golden goodness on the outside. Warm, pumpkin spice cream on the inside.
So much so that as I am typing this, the hubby is asking if I can go get some more of these Pumpkin Spice Oreos so that he can verify that they were in fact as yummy as he had originally stated.
These treats are perfect for a kid friendly Halloween party or a fun alternative to smores around the campfire.
What do you think? Are you willing to try these out for yourself?
