Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
-1 Corinthians 13:4-8
It’s February! The month of LOVE! For some, this time of year is seen as a welcoming opportunity to shower those that we care about the most with gifts of chocolate, roses, hugs, and kisses. But for others, it is just another reminder of what is lacking or absent from their lives.
The truth is that it doesn’t matter if we are single, dating, divorced, married, or widowed. God loves us all exactly how we are and exactly where we are in our lives at this very moment. Jesus wanted us to love God above all else FIRST and then to love our neighbor as we would ourselves (Mark 12: 29-31).
This year, let us try something completely different. Think of different ways you can show thanks and love to your heavenly father. Do you need to spend more prayer time with him? Is there something that He has asked you to do in obedience that you have been putting off?
How can you show love to your family, friends, and neighbors? Is there a family that could really use your help? And better yet, how can you show love to your enemies? Is it time to let go of a wrong doing and let forgiveness fill your heart?
The best thing about spreading love is that it is a two fold gift. You truly do get back just as much as you give. Love softens hearts and spreads God’s light to so many dark places in this world. Let’s face it. This world is a broken and hurting. Your small act of kindness and generosity could be the difference between a person choosing the false rewards of this world or the treasures of eternity when they follow Jesus. And in the end, isn’t that what our lives are really about?
So before you run to the store to grab a single rose or a heart shaped balloon, think about this one question:
What is love to you?
